SO THE OVERVIEW OF THE PRESENTATION WILL JUST TALK ABOUT WHAT BUSH KIDS IS, WHAT WE DO IN THE COMMUNITY, THE TRAINING AND CONSULTATION THAT WE OFFER, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION TO WHAT WE DO AND THE CALLS TO ACTION THAT WE'RE COMMITTED TO AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR QUESTIONS.

SO BUSH KIDS IS AN ON THE LAND LEARNING INITIATIVE THAT HELPS CHILDREN AND YOUTH AND ALSO ADULTS TO LEARN TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES, EACH OTHER AND STRENGTHEN CONFIDENCE AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LAND.

WE ARE A SMALL BUSINESS.

WE'RE NORTHERN OWNED.

ESTABLISHED IN 2018.

AND WE OFFER A PLACE BASED, LAND BASED LOCALLY AND CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE OPTIONS FOR EDUCATION AND FOR

SO IN THE NWT PEOPLE, INCLUDING MY OWN FAMILY AND ANCESTORS, HAVE BEEN LEARNING ON AND FROM THE LAND SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL. AND THAT IS ULTIMATELY WHAT MAKES US PEOPLE OF THIS PLACE AND WHAT MAKES US WHO WE ARE AND HOW WE'VE EVOLVED.

SO THROUGH BUSH KIDS, WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE LAND AS THE FOUNDATION FOR CULTURES, OUR LANGUAGES, AND OUR KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS OF THE NORTH.

THAT'S WHY WE FOUNDED BUSH KIDS WITH THAT INTENTION OF DRIVING CHANGE SO THAT ON THE LAND THEY WOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE WHO IS LIVING AND LEARNING IN THIS PLACE TODAY.

WE BELIEVE THAT THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ON THE LAND IS ESSENTIAL FOR EVERYDAY LIFE, NOT AS AN ADD ON AND CERTAINLY NOT A PRIVILEGE FOR FOR SOME.

AND SO THAT'S WHY WE'RE WORKING TOWARDS IMPLEMENTING THIS LEARNING THROUGHOUT THE PUBLIC SYSTEM INSTEAD OF SIMPLY BECOMING A PRIVATE OR ADDITIONAL OFFERING.

WE HAVE TWO MAIN PRINCIPALS AT BUSH KIDS.

SO THE FIRST ONE IS THAT THE LAND NEEDS THE LEARNING.

AND AS I SAID JUST IN THE PREVIOUS SLIDE, WHEN WE TALK ABOUT LAND, WE CONSIDER THAT LAND INCLUDES PEOPLE, CULTURES, LANGUAGES AND KNOWLEDGE AS WELL.

SO THOSE ARE FRONT AND CENTER FOR US.

WE THROUGH OUR PROGRAMING, WE ARE VERY COGNIZANT OF THE LAND AND WHAT THE LAND IS TELLING US.

AND WE BUILD OUR CURRICULUM AND OUR SCHEDULES AROUND THAT.

THE SECOND IS CALLED ETHICAL SPACE.

AND ETHICAL SPACE IS ESSENTIALLY A BALANCE OF INDIGENOUS AND YOUR WESTERN WORLDVIEWS IN WAYS OF KNOWING, DOING AND BEING.

SO WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT WE ARE CONSISTENTLY WORKING TO BRING IN AND BALANCE INDIGENOUS WORLDVIEWS OF LEARNING WITH THE MAINSTREAM WORLDVIEWS WHICH ARE NEURO WESTERN BASED CURRICULUMS THAT THAT OPERATE IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

SO WE'RE WORKING TO CREATE A BALANCE WHILE ON THE LAND TOGETHER.

AND THAT MEANS, AGAIN, THAT WHEREVER WE ARE, OUR PROGRAMING IS ADAPTIVE AND IT'S SELF-DETERMINED.

SO WE'RE PAYING ATTENTION TO LAND, WE'RE PAYING ATTENTION TO PEOPLE, AND WE'RE FOCUSING ON RELATIONSHIPS AND PROCESS, BEING FLEXIBLE AND OPEN MINDED. I THINK THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS THAT THE SPACE WE ARE IS SO IMPORTANT TO US BECAUSE WE BUILD OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT SPACE OVER TIME AND IT'S BECOME ALL OF THE ROCKS AND THE TREES AND THE THE LAKE AND THE ENERGY IS IT'S PART OF WHO WE ARE.

AND EACH AND EVERY CHILD IS IN RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT SPACE.

THE TUESDAY BUSH KIDS PROGRAM.

THIS IS A WEEKLY PROGRAM.

OBVIOUSLY, EVERY TUESDAY IT'S OPEN REGISTRATION FOR 16 CHILDREN, AGES 5 TO 11, AND IT RUNS FROM 9 A.M.

TO 3:00 PM. WE COULD EXPAND THIS PROGRAM.

WE HAVE AN ENORMOUS WAIT LIST, BUT WE DON'T BECAUSE JUST GOING BACK TO WHAT CHLOE MENTIONED, OUR FOCUS IS TO SUPPORT OTHERS IN CREATING ACCESSIBLE LAND BASED PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN, PRIMARILY THROUGH THE EDUCATION SYSTEM.

THE PARTNERS THAT PARTICIPATE IN THIS TUESDAY BUSH KIDS PROGRAM ARE QUITE LARGE.

THE NORTH SLAVE METIS ALLIANCE, [INAUDIBLE] AND NWT LITERACY COUNCIL.

THEY PROVIDE FUNDING FOR PARTICIPANTS REGISTRATION FEES.

HE IS WORKING WITH US IN A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF ENR, THE ON THE LAND UNIT, AND THEY ALSO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR US TO RUN THE PROGRAM AND OTHER PARTNERS INCLUDE [INAUDIBLE] THE EARLY LEARNING AND CHILD CARE PROGRAM WITH THE AURORA COLLEGE AND MOST OBVIOUSLY OUR NEIGHBORS.

THE ARCTIC INDIGENOUS WELLNESS FOUNDATION ARE VERY SUPPORTIVE PARTNERS AS WELL.

ANOTHER REALLY IMPORTANT AREA IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN IS THE MENTORSHIP THAT WE CAN PROVIDE TO AURORA COLLEGE STUDENT IN THE EARLY LEARNING AND CHILD CARE DIPLOMA PROGRAM.

SO THAT HAPPENED REGULARLY ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS BEFORE THE PANDEMIC.

AND SO NOW WE'RE JUST BRINGING THAT OPPORTUNITY BACK TO LIFE NOW, AND WE OFFER SPACE FOR THESE STUDENTS TO DO THEIR FIELD PLACEMENT, FIELD PLACEMENT ONE AND FIELD PLACEMENT TWO.

WE ALSO OFFER A COURSE FOR THE NURSING PROGRAM, YEAR THREE STUDENTS.

THROUGH BUSH KIDS AT THE SITE, AND THAT IS THE INTRODUCTION TO NWT OR AN INTRODUCTION TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF THE NWT IS THE NAME OF THE COURSE.

THE THIRD AREA WE WANTED TO MENTION IS OUR MENTORSHIPS.

SO THIS LIST THAT YOU HAVE, THERE IS JUST SOME OF THE PARTNERSHIPS THAT WE'VE HAD AND MENTORSHIPS THAT WE'VE OFFERED.

THE MENTORSHIP LOOKS LIKE AN EDUCATOR WORKING WITH US FOR SIX STRAIGHT WEEKS, ONE DAY A WEEK, AND WE WOULD SPEND 3 TO 4 HOURS MODELING HOW LAND CAN LEAD LEARNING WITH THAT TEACHER AND THE STUDENTS, WITH THE HOPE THAT WE CAN SUPPORT THE TEACHER, TO TRUST THAT THE LAND CAN UNCOVER CURRICULUM, AND THAT CURRICULUM COMPETENCIES CAN BE MET THROUGH LAND BASED LEARNING.

AND THE LAST PIECE IS THE TRAINING AND CONSULTING THAT WE OFFER.

SO WE'VE TRAVELED TO DIFFERENT REGIONS, ALMOST ALL REGIONS IN THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES.

SOME OF THE COMMUNITIES ARE LISTED THERE.

SO WE OFFER TWO DAY WORKSHOPS AND WE ALSO OFFER A PRACTITIONER CERTIFICATION COURSE, WHICH IS A BLENDED COURSE WHERE WE MEET FOR FIVE DAYS ON THE LAND TO BEGIN THE COURSE.

AND THEN THERE'S EIGHT MONTHS OF ONLINE LEARNING AND REFLECTIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS.

THIS PARTNERSHIP IS WITH THE CHILD NATURE ALLIANCE OF CANADA.

SO WE, SOME OF OUR STAFF ARE AFFILIATED AND OUR FACILITATORS WITH THAT ORGANIZATION AS WELL.

AND WE CONTINUE TO OFFER THESE COURSES RIGHT NOW.

SO SOME OF THE CALLS TO ACTION THAT WE FEEL ARE A PRIORITY FOR BUSH KIDS ARE YEAH.

AND WE PROVIDE THE NECESSARY FUNDING TO POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS TO EDUCATE TEACHERS ON HOW TO INTEGRATE INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE AND TEACHING METHODS IN THE CLASSROOMS. AND WE DO THAT BY FIELD PLACEMENTS WITH THE EARLY LEARNING AND CHILD CARE STUDENTS AT AURORA COLLEGE, AS WELL AS EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS, MENTORSHIP AND CONSULTING PROGRAMS THAT WE DO.

SO THIS ONE SAYS BUILDING STUDENT CAPACITY FOR INTERCULTURAL UNDERSTANDING, EMPATHY AND MUTUAL RESPECT.

THIS REALLY SPEAKS BACK TO THE ETHICAL SPACE THAT WE CREATE AND TRY TO FOSTER IN BUSH KIDS.

AND ALSO WHY WHEN WE PRIORITIZE THE DIVERSE RANGE OF BUSH KIDS PARTICIPANTS IN OUR REGISTRATION.

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS THIS MEMO INADVERTENTLY DIDN'T MAKE IT TO COUNCIL THIS SPRING.

SO THAT'S WHY WE'RE BRINGING IT HERE.

NOW, WE JUST REALIZE THAT THIS HASN'T COME FORWARD TO COUNCIL FOR A FULL APPROVAL.

SO THE RECOMMENDATION IS TO TOP UP HOUSING FIRST FOR ADULTS, FOR FAMILIES AND PREVENTION AND SHELTER DIVERSION.

SO THESE AMOUNTS, PLUS THE AMOUNT THAT WAS APPROVED BY COUNCIL BACK IN MARCH, WILL MEAN THAT THESE THREE POTS HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF FUNDING IN 2022 AS THEY DID IN 2021.

SO WE STILL HAVE ABOUT $1.2 MILLION TO ALLOCATE.

AND DURING THE DISCUSSIONS IN MAY, THE HOPE WAS THAT CMHC IS GOING TO TRANSFER THE ASPEN APARTMENT, WHICH IS A 36 UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN YELLOWKNIFE THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS AND IS SITTING VACANT.

HAVE CMHC TRANSFER THAT TO A NON-MARKET HOUSING ORGANIZATION, AND WE COULD ALLOCATE THE REMAINING $1.2 MILLION TO THAT TO THAT GROUP WHO'S GOING TO TAKE OVER ASPEN? BECAUSE THERE'S STUFF LIKE THEY NEED A NEW ROOF, THEY NEED A BOILER.

SO THERE'S A FEW LITTLE RENOS THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN.

SO THE $1.2 MILLION WOULD BE KIND OF THE BUMP UP.

HOWEVER, THE MONEY DOES HAVE TO GET SPENT.

SO IF THE FEDS ARE DRAGGING THEIR HEELS FEET ON, TRANSFERRING ASPEN.

CAB WOULD BE LOOKING TO ALLOCATE THE FUNDING TO DIFFERENT PROJECTS.

SO THERE IS A CALL OUT RIGHT NOW IF IF OTHER ORGANIZATIONS HAVE IDEAS SO THAT CAB CAN MEET AGAIN SHORTLY TO DISCUSS SHOULD WE REALLOCATE IT TO SOMETHING ELSE BESIDES ASPEN? OR IF IT LOOKS LIKE THE PROJECT'S ACTUALLY GOING TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR, THEN CAN GO AHEAD WITH ASPEN.
